A good resource to always go back to
I don't purchase "self-help" books much. But after continually enduring some problems in my marriage and personal life that were driving me to the breaking point, I decided I needed something. I selected this book after "sampling" many (as best you can) here on Amazon. It is obviously a book for Christians so if you aren't one, no need to pick this up, it will be of no help. I was also a little leary of a "Christian" self-help book, because although I am a believer, I've found many of these books to be "preachy"...a bit too-sugar-coated (or, just the opposite)....just often not my cup of tea. I like outside-the-box stuff. But overall, this was an excellent book which addresses how do deal with the main dissapointments, failures, heartaches and unexplained tragedies that seem to define our lives. Although I intuitively knew much of what the author was saying, she says it in a way that sheds immediate new light on the scripture she uses to back it up. Even as someone who's been a Christian over 40 years, I can still have problems relating to bible versus or picking out their deeper meanings. This is where Ms. Guthrie is at her best. Also at the end of each chapter, she take some liberties and "speaks as Jesus might speak" directly to you, using some bible versus loosely as a reference. I'd normally hate this but I think she did a good job and nothing seemed "out of bounds". As an aside, I was especially taken with the chapter on forgiveness - not one of the chapters I was expecting to be uplifted by but, surprise, surprise....she'll make you see how your problems and hurts all connect in this Christian journey we call life.I'm a hard grader and am giving it 4 stars only because I was hoping for more of her human persepctive and less on actualy bible versus - her take and insight seemed almos always spot on so I wanted more of that. But I get "why" she did it. Anyway, lot's of 5 star reviews here and I can see why. Recommended!

Enormously helpful for grieving hearts
I can't put into words how helpful this book has been for me and my faith. Last year, I lost my infant son to heart defects and ever since have been grappling with how my all-loving, all-powerful God could allow this. This book was a balm to my soul. It's answered questions about how to continue to trust God and grow near to him when your worst fears are realized; it's given me insight into God's purpose for suffering; and it's encouraged me to better love and forgive others. Nancy Guthrie doesn't sugarcoat the realities of our world, but reminds of the loving hand of the God who holds us. I don't have enough positive things to say. I keep rereading this book and I have both a kindle and physical copy of the book. It is so tremendously helpful in the deep darkness of grief. For me, I was in a dark spot when I found this book. This book has made it easier for me to pray and trust God again, whatever may come. Thank you so much for your testimony and ministry, Nancy!

A Must Read and Study
I am only on Chapter 3. I must say that I will have to re-read carefully and prayerfully before embarking on that chapter. For any Christian woman, of any denomination, who has lost a child, this book will absolutely revolutionize your spiritual life and love for God. It speaks truth. When I lost my daughter, my only child, at age 23 to mental illness, my world stopped. But my faith became stronger. It is now my responsibility to allow God to use this tragedy in my life for His purpose. I have never blamed Him. I have always understood that Jesus took on every single sorrow, humiliation, disappointment, rejection, betrayal (and more) that any of us could, will, feel, have felt. But what I *know* and what I *feel* are often two separate things. Ms. Guthrie is teaching me how to connect "head" and "heart" and allow my journey with God to proceed into His desire for it. I urge you: read this book; read it slowly; read it repeatedly. Listen with your "heart" because He is speaking through this writing into your very soul. God bless you, Nancy Guthrie.

A healing balm
I realized that Guthrie had walked through intense seasons of sorrow while working through one of her Bible Studies in the Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament series. Two of Guthrie's children died only months after they were born. I knew that this was a book that I needed to get my hands on. It has been a wonderful, healing balm to my soul as I have slowly read through this book the past few months. It is not a book that you can breeze through quickly. Rather this book needs to be savored and chewed upon in small pieces. If you or someone you know has been going through a season of sorrow I simply cannot commend this book to you enough.

good for grief
Nancy lost two children and speaks from that perspective. I experienced a different type of loss, but I could relate to 90% of the book even though we were grieving differently. If you are grieving, purchase this book sooner than later. Nancy walks through many of the steps(that by God's grace I have just been through. There was one chapter that I could not quite understand where she landed, so I'll be spending time there, hoping that God shows me truths about himself.

Hearing Jesus Speak Into Your Sorrow
A great book of encouragement during a time of loss. Given to us as a gift from a friend after the loss of our son, we have ordered another to have on hand and to give as a gift to another friend who has recently suffered a loss. Written by one who has experience the loss of two children, the author writes of the many aspects of sorrow and how the words of Jesus recorded in Scripture helps us with our sorrow. Strongly recommended.

This is very thought provoking. Not for those with a recent loss. But with that said, Gutherie does have satisfying answers.
This is very thought provoking. Not for those with a recent loss, it is advisable to read this after allowing sufficient time to process the shock and anger of a tragric life-changing loss. But with that said, Gutherie does have satisfying answers to very tough questions for those with a Biblical World view.
