Have used this and similar products for many, many years! Where the 'color enhancing' really works is when raising young fish and amphibians from earlier stages in life. Of course other factors effect coloration such as water temp and pH. Light is also an important factor often ignored.The greatest noticeable affect is when given to leusistic or albino critters. Because both these conditions are lacking in most or all skin pigments when given foods with natural pigments from alga and other including animal sources tend to become almost glowing/golden looking creatures as opposed to the pale white or grayish coloration they began with.About a year or so ago shared an impromptu observation with a long-time employee (have known for years) at a local pet/aquarium store RE: albino Dojo Loaches mixed in with 'normals'- "Why would anyone want to buy eel-like looking fish so pathetically pale... almost sickly white?She looked at me gave me the lip twist (a joke? Maybe he is being serious?)Before she had a chance to respond I immediately said: "All it takes is the right fish food with multiple color enhancing ingredients and these are among the most entertaining, colorful and magnificent of fish!"Have some albino Dojo Loaches. When first obtained they were of course a very peeked light colored. Soon they began to deepen in color. After years they are these amazing golden or deep yellow creatures. (not yellow, gold nor orange but a rich combination of all three colors)By the way... The Dojo Loach has become my favorite fish. Based upon their range of behaviour, how beautiful they have become as well as most importantly for me: They are so responsive and interactive in my presence!!!In interactive/responsiveness- Dojos rank close to the Paradise Fish where at feeding time they come into the palms of my hand to get food (as the Paradise Fish...) Yet at the same time as is their nature Paradise Fish father would tear my palm to shreds if he could to protect eggs/children!!! Paradise Fish also respond exceedingly well to foods with natural pigments. Blue form is my favorite form. Enhanced coloring shows amazing contrast between red vertical bands and sometimes brilliant blue... especially a displaying male. The black species... well you figure? The Albino will show yellow-gold colors with reddish hi-lites.Amphibians, even turtles respond to natural pigments in their food. Have gone so far as add pigment enhanced flakes like this to cricket and roach food where these critters are in turn fed to frogs, salamanders, lizards and turtles.Of course for the very, very serious animal keeper there are at least a few resources where could concoct his/her own critter food. Unfortunately it can quickly become very expensive unless you know exactly what you are doing!

The 5oz is huge so don't buy it unless you have a lot of fish (at least 50). My barbs, especially the roselines, won't accept pellets of any brand so out of desperation I tried cobalt flakes. They love them! To prevent swim bladder issues associated with flakes I'll submerge the flakes when feeding. I also feed these flakes as a fine powder to my fry. I'm not sure if the "color" option of cobalt flakes if worth the premium price but I"ll give them the benefit of the doubt. Overall I would still recommend pellets but these flakes offer a nice alternative.On a side note, I have noticed much less diatome algae in tanks I feed these flakes to. That may mean these flakes have less raw protein. I'm not sure but my fish are health so I'm not concerned.

I really like the quality of this food. My only complaint that knocks it down to a four star is that the flakes are HUGE which makes feeding small fish difficult without crushing it first. But besides that it’s great!

The fish love it and any extra doesn't pollute the water. Cobalt is the only flake food I've fed my fish for at least a decade and they've been healthy and long lived. A little spendy compared to some bigger brands but worth it.
