A book that opens your eyes to real life experiences!! Awesome book!
The author has written this memoir of writings with such clarity and vulnerability. I was so thankful to read this book with another set of eyes. I feel like this book has humor, sheds tears, expresses anger and has real emotions that many people have experienced, yet never want to share—because of fear. Thank you to the author for granting me the opportunity to see with different eyes:your life. I’m so thankful you are still living to share your memoirs. I definitely feel your healing.

A Must Read and I Couldn't Put It Down
What I like about this book is the way the author draws you in with intricate details throughout the story. It is raw, real, and revealing, inviting the reader to explore a glimpse of her life. This book motivates you to reach out to others past the silence they may display. If they don't answer right away, just wait or invite the person to speak another time, maybe they need time to think. I love this book .

Easy reading that doesn’t bore you!
Finished this book in a week or so. The author writes so discreetly; each story feels like real life. Growing up in a large, religious family in the 80’s caused much anxiety for the author. Issues of race, identity AND codependency were highlighted throughout the book. A deep and fun read (some stories are hilarious) If you aren’t the best reader you’ll love how easy it is to read.

It felt like I was right there
This memoir is sad, funny, tender, compassionate, eye-opening and important. Each stand-alone chapter is a story told by the author through her own eyes as a young child. The sixth of nine children in a very religious, black family - attending a mostly white school in the 1980s, the author's memory is astounding and the detail draws the reader into each story. There were so many times while reading this, that I wished I could go back and right some of the wrongs young Winn experienced. Our society would be better if everyone just read this book.
