In short: an extraordinarily well-made journal casing with a very interesting replaceable paper stock.The leather journal itself is a solid size, large enough to be useful while not becoming ungainly. The leather is soft and flexible, and allows for quite a bit of rough treatment without showing any wear and tear. The cover's design is extremely straightforward, with the paper book slipping into internal sleeves on either side of the jacket. It should be possible to refill the journal with multiple kinds of inserts, but honestly the paper is most fascinating part of this particular item.It appears to be a composited paper, with a nice "old" feel as though you are writing in a book made a very long time ago. The paper itself has an uneven mulch-like grain that's soft to the touch, and both pens and pencils make nice, easy markings that indent nicely without going too deep and causing raised indentations on the reverse side. (I've tried to capture these qualities in the attached pictures.) The binding is a surprising combination of flexible and durable, giving me the ability to fold pages out firmly without cracking the binding. It also doesn't snap shut when released. All in all it's fun to write in, and I'll be definitely be refilling with the same paper. The outside of the refills are also an interesting pattern, and I think it will also look quite nice to label the spine of a completed insert and put it on a shelf by itself.Note: I received this product at a discount for an honest review.

...to me that's what it looks and feels like. This handcrafted beauty is exactly what I wanted for my travel/photgraphy journal. The leather, paper and workmanship are all superb. I appreciate the size, the classic style and that it is refillable. I wasn't sure I would use the leather wrap but it's so elegant in simplicity and function that I enjoy the ceremony of a couple of quick turns, especially since it looks so cool.It is missing a few things...it has no batteries to recharge, it doesn't break when dropped, it doesn't hurt my eyes and there are no frickin ads popping up.Thanks, Rustic Town for putting a little soul back into my life.

I love this paper refill and the leather cover! I have three of these journals and have been using them for almost ten years. The textured paper absorbs ink well and provides an old-world feel reminiscent of those journaling with calligraphy pens by candlelight. I also like that the paper is not pure white; the yellowish undertone contributes to the historical, authentic experience. The leather is soft and supple, with a luxurious feel and unique markings that affirm its genuineness. All three of my journals have their own characteristics. I love the strap, too -- makes it feel all the more like an original journal vs. just a diary.

I loved the look and feel of this journal, but the longer I've had it the more I've realized that certain pens don't work well on it. The paper is very thick and coarse, it's ruined a couple of my felt pens. However, I paint and draw in it at times, and it works very well for that since the paper is so thick!

The dimensions were hard to find, exactly what I needed for LONG term record keeping at a small desk. It is sturdy, clean, and crisp.

I bought this journal in anticipation for a backcountry canoe trip in Alaska this summer. I love how the pages are unlined and lay flat so that I can write, draw or paint. The cover is beautiful and the strap around works well to keep the journal closed. The size is also nice - big enough that I can write or draw, but small enough that it fits in my backpack quite easily.

I found the journal to beautifully made. High quality. I will probably buy several more. Great for Christmas gifts.

I was hoping for plain white paper, I had a feeling this would happen.. My odds of getting a nice leather strapped sketchbook is near pointless. I already have 4 or 5 leather stitched hand journals, mostly all if not all with cotton paper and that material is sad to try and sketch with. The graphite doesn't apply well and erasing makes a bigger mess on the paper.
